When Nora was in the sixth grade she decided she wanted to play the flute in the school band. My niece Megan had played the flute, and my sister still had it sitting around so she gave it to Nora. My friend Mitch plays flute and sax, so I took to him for an evaluation. I thought it might need just a little tune-up, but he shook his head and suggested I make a lamp out of it. In the meantime, the band director discouraged Nora from playing flute and instead steered her towards the clarinet. We bought her a used student clarinet, and about eight years later I finally got around to making the lamp with parts from Home Depot and a shade on clearance from Annapolis Lighing. The base is a ceramic floor tile.
