The entrance to the Cairo Marriott
A32 Cairo Marriott 2.jpg

The Cairo Tower, built in 1961. The story is that the U.S. government gave Nasser, then-President of Egypt, about $3 million to be used for his security detail. This was said to be an attempt to win back alliance from Egypt after the USSR had supported the building of the Aswan Dam. Nasser resented the attempt to buy him and used the money to build the tower to throw it back in the Americans' face. This site has an interactive 360 panaramic view from the tower.

The Great Pyramids are barely visible through the dust and smog from the tower. Mouseover to see a version showing the outline of the pyramids.
