The interior of Abu Simbel. It was constructed so that twice a year, on the coronation day and again on the official birthday of Ramses II,
the rising sun would shine so that a shaft of light illuminated the chamber at the end of this corridor.
(When we visited in 2008 photos were prohibited inside the temple. I took this photo in 1993 when Rabab and I visited here.) |

The gods' chamber at the end of the corridor. The statues are of Ptah (originally the creator, later an underworld god), Amon-Ra (god of the sun, merged from two prior gods, Amun and Ra), Ra-Harakhte (a merger of Horus and Ra) , and Ramesses II. Ptah was a god of darkness, who was not illuminated by the sun.

Carvings in the wall depict either the enslavement of or a military victory over Nubians, who populated the area just to the south. Today Nubia is a region within Egypt though they have their own language and culture. IMG_5098 Abu Simbel wall.JPG (1.38 MB) |
